Star of Chained for Life Adam pearson will be in the house for these screenings!
This lovely film within a film within a film is packed full of wonderful layers and cinematic surprises. Variety Magazine asks the question “what if the “freaks” made Tod Browning’s Freaks?” - and that takes you somewhere close to where this unique and idiosyncratic film goes.
As the film opens, we’re on set in the making of B-grade horror film set on the grounds of an old mental institution, right down to the mad professor, Siamese twins and all manner of physical and social outcasts of humanity. Into this akimbo story is inserted a beautiful blonde, Freda who develops an unusual bond with one of the film’s more unique characters, Rosenthal who suffers from a condition that causes extreme facial disfigurement.
On set, Rosenthal and the band of outsiders do what they’re told, but after stealing a camera, it’s the things they do that they’re not told that makes for much more rewarding viewing. This genuinely human and intelligent film breaks down what a film is to produce a work that plays with the cinema form and rewards audiences with real honesty and humour.
One of our favourite films and bound to be one of yours.
