Based on true events Savage Youth follows a group of disenfranchised young people in a racially divided small town community. As the narrative develops, and the tension is ratcheted-up, friendships form and lines are drawn, and events start to move inexorably to a head.
Director Michael Johnson handles the material with nuance, remaining true to the drama and letting his cast - which includes Grace Victoria Cox (Extremely Wicked Shocking Evil and Vile, Twin Peaks), Chloe Levine (The Ranger, The Deuce), Sasha Feldman (Get Shorty), and Mitchell Edwards (The First Purge) - create believable characters, which gives the film its power. Savage Youth creates a brutally realistic depiction of contemporary alienation and nihilism, and sets a new benchmark for films depicting disenfranchised youth.
Screens with the short film The True History of Billie the Kid.
