For children growing up in Adelaide and Bendigo in the 1960s Cobby’s Hobbies was prime time viewing. Cobby was a showbiz chimpanzee and in each four-minute episode he would try to master a different hobby.
Co-director Donna McRae (Lost Gully Road, Revelation 2018) takes us back to her childhood and her memories of watching the now obscure television show, before setting off to find out what happened to the chimpanzee that entertained young television audiences.
As her travels progress, she finds out more about Cobby and the life of television chimps, and what happens to them after their television careers end.
Combining pop culture nostalgia with a journey into animal rights, Cobby: The Other Side of Cute tells an evocative story about our relationship with animals and, more importantly, their relationship with humans.
Screens with the short film Sohrab and Rustum.
