I Used to be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story

Watching I Used To Be Normal it’s easy to see why it won an audience award at this year’s HotDocs,

Director Jessica Leski’s documentary tells the story of the girls who become diehard fans of boybands. Following super fans from across generation, the film looks at the girls and women who love The Beatles, One Direction and Take That, among others.

The film celebrates these fans and gives them the opportunity to tell their stories. Like other coming of age movies, the young women in I Used To Be Normalhave to navigate various challenges; emerging sexuality, difficult parents, first love, and the possibilities of their own dreams, and I Used To Be Normaloffers a funny and poignant celebration of what it means to be a fan – a true devotee – of a boyband.
