Ever wondered what the world might have been like if it took just one slightly different turn? What if one person in a position of authority made just one slightly different decision to take a roll of the dice on a visionary who could literally change the shape of the way we live today.
This is the story of one such person and one such moment – the difference though is no one made the decision and so nothing changed.
This remarkable story from Chad Fredrichs (director of the cult documentary Jandek on Corwood) follows the work and dreams of inventor, comic illustrator and futurist Athelstan Spilhaus and his 1960s futuristic attempt to solve urban problems by creating a full-size city from scratch in the isolated woods of northern Minnesota. This city was meant to be organic, learning from its own mistakes, constantly regenerating and using the most modern of technologies in every respect.
With access to the most amazing recordings of committee meetings, taped interviews with Spilhaus himself, lingering examinations of his brilliant comics and the ideas they contained, Fredrichs paints a most involving portrait of the man, the changing 60s and the most amazing idea that just about revolutionised the planet.
