Official Selection: Rotterdam Film Festival
What a brilliant look at the history of gospel music in the US! Director Robert Clem captures the simplicity and intensity of the “hard Gospel” sound from the late 30s and 40s and its transition into the sounds and performance of rock, soul and funk that moulded the 50s and 60s.
There’s many fine elements to this documentary, but what elevates How They Got Over above other films that deal with moments in music trajectory are the extended performance sequences. Clem doesn’t stray too far from the Gospel path but allows us to enjoy the clips in their entirety and uninterrupted from their slow build to their joyous climaxes bathed in sweat and righteous abandon.
Then there’s the stories of the road and the rigorous competition between all the bands on the “chitlin’ circuit” throughout the eastern, southern, and upper mid-west of the US.
This fine and uplifting work features live and rare performances by the Dixie Hummingbirds, Blind Boys of Alabamaand Mississippi, the incredibleSister Rosetta Tharpe, Soul Stirrers, Fairfield Four, Sensational Nightingales, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Highway QCsand more.
Director Robert Clem will be attending Revelation.
