One of the key figures in folk music Shirley Collins MBE travelled with Alan Lomax through the southern states of the USA in 1959, documenting the music and stories they heard there. In the fifties, sixties and seventies she recorded beautiful and widely lauded albums (Sweet England, False True Lovers, and The Power of the True Love Knot, as well as Folk Roots, New Routes with Davy Graham, Anthems in Eden with her sister Dolly, and many albums with the Albion Country Band), before disappearing from the public eye with dysphonia in 1978.
Directed by Rob Curry and Tim Plester (familiar to Rev audiences for The Way of Morris) The Ballad of Shirley Collins tells her story, and follows the singer as she rediscovers her voice and records the critically acclaimed ‘comeback’ Lodestar. Alongside Collins the film features contributions from fans Stewart Lee and David Tibet, among others, and paints a fascinating and evocative portrait of the singer.
