The Rider tells the story of Brady (Brady Jandreau), a rodeo cowboy who finds himself unable to ride following an accident in an evocative film that explores masculinity, fraternity, and family. With a script that draws in part on Brady Jandreau’s real-life experiences, and a cast that includes Jandreau’s own father and sister, there is a genuine power to the film, as Brady has to navigate his future in a world of horses, rodeos, plains, and big skies.
Hauntingly shot by Joshua James Richards, The Rider is a beautiful and poetic film that captures the quiet struggles that define our humanity. In realising this, director Chloe Zhao draws incredible performances from her cast of non-actors who are appearing as fictionalised versions of themselves. With The Rider winning awards at Cannes Film Festival, Athens International Film Festival, and Hamburg Film Festival, amongst others, it is clear that director, writer and producer Chloe Zhao is an inspired filmmaker and it’s unsurprising she has been nominated as one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch.
