Official Selection: Venice Film Festival
Losing his girlfriend, job and home in a matter of days, Eli finds himself living in the back of his truck, a parting gift from his parents who have decided to move to Arizona. Deep in an existential crisis, and despite the fact that it’s the middle of winter, he agrees to deliver an engine to a mechanic upstate.
A chance meeting with a young woman, Anya, leads to a slowly developing relationship. But it becomes apparent that things may not be quite as straightforward as they appear, with both Eli and Anya having uncommon interests in hair.
A truly unique film, which has variously been described as comedy, horror, road movie, and romance, Are We Not Cats is the feature debut from award winning short filmmaker Xander Robin, whose previous works include the shorts Love Is A Rhombus and The Virgin Herod.
With a cast that includes Michael Patrick Nicholson (We Are Still Here) and Chelsea Lopez (Him), Are We Not Cats is markedly different from most indie films, in part because of its joyously off-kilter sensibility but also because it retains a visceral quality more familiar from horror.
Are We Not Cats plays like a strange combination of early Hal Hartley and David Cronenberg.
“… a distinctive New York indie that's promising and uncompromising in roughly equal measure.” The Hollywood Reporter
