Offical Selection: SXSW
Following early experiences with LSD, a group of Californian surfers and proto-hippies saw the potentials of the drug for transforming consciousness and, they hoped, the world.
Describing themselves as the Brotherhood of Eternal Love they started manufacturing and distributing the drug in vast quantities. Orange Sunshine – from which the film takes its name – was the street name given to a particularly well-known type of acid that the group manufactured.
The Brotherhood’s story, told here for the first time, emerges as one of the central tales of sixties counter-culture. The social and cultural impact of their mission was vast.
Through a combination of beautifully shot re-enactments, archive footage, and in-depth interviews (some a decade in the making), Orange Sunshine offers a fascinating insight into an era of psychedelic optimism, as the Brotherhood work towards a new future just one-step ahead of the law.
With the energy and pace of a thriller Orange Sunshine is essential viewing.
