De Witt island, colloquially known as Big Witch, rises out of the Southern Ocean, a few kilometres from the rugged, barren south coast of Tasmania. Almost inaccessible, it may as well be on another planet, indeed much of the landscape appears other worldy.
Inspired by the true story of eighteen-year-old Jane Cooper who travelled to the tiny uninhabited island alone in 1971, I Go Further Under takes a similar path, with its central protagonist (Emily Milledge) travelling south to the cold, damp, island on the fringe of the Roaring Forties.
Director James Newitt creates a beautiful, uncanny, and poetic film which explores the island rising from the ocean, its landscape, space, and the solitude it offers, as well as the need for some individuals to travel as far away as possible to escape the vestiges of civilization. The images are accompanied by stunning sound design that opens up the experience of listening to the viewer and adds to the haunting beauty of this unique work.
Lead actor Emily Milledge will be in attendance.
Screens with the short film Moon Above Raging Sea.
