As one of Australia’s best produced thrillers, this thrill-ride simply does not stop!

Starring the two US imports of Jamie Lee Curits and Stacey Keach but directed by Australia’s own Richard Franklin, Road Games is a true cat and mouse story set on the lonely Nullabor road. Pat Quid (Keach) is truckin’ his way across country on his way to Perth when he stops to pick up a sassy hitchhiker (remember them?), Hitch (Curtis). She’s a smart-mouth rich-type mooching around and he’s not your typical truckie – “Just because I drive a truck, doesn’t mean I’m a truck driver...”

Despite their differences and confined to the cab of the road-train, there’s some fun to be had as they both enjoy verbally fencing with other in what is some extraordinarily fast-paced and well written dialogue from Australian film veteran Everett De Roche. They soon discover however that they’re also possibly sharing the road with a serial killer who’s murdering hitchhikers, just like Hitch, and from there the games begin.

One of Tarantino’s favourite Australian films and in a class of its own Road Games has an unmistakable Australian flavour, right down to the Mad Max-esque Brian May score. For the time it was the most expensive film every produced in Australia and still today it stands up to repeated viewing, due in large part due to the honesty of the performances, the simplicity of the idea and Franklin’s tight hand at the helm.
