The Revelation Perth International Film Festival continues its sixth commissioning collaboration with the City of Vincent via the City of Vincent Film Project; providing $7,000 to three local filmmakers to produce a non-fiction short (10-min or less) shining a light on stories from within the municipality.
The only project of its kind in Australia, “the City of Vincent Film Project gives emerging filmmakers the chance to realise their dreams and break into the screen industry,” says Mayor Emma Cole.
“The beauty of this project is that it not only unearths local talent, it also uncovers incredible stories from within our community. Each year, the filmmakers inspire us with their passion and creativity as they bring these authentic local stories to life,” Cole continues.
Previous years have seen shorts about neighbourhood letterboxes, a beekeeper, orphaned animals, women’s AFL, indigenous stories of Noongar families who grew up in the region, a love letter to community radio and a celebration of the well-loved institution that is the ReStore Leederville.
Films born from this initiative – like Pacing the Pool (2021) – have screened at hundreds of national and global festivals, spotlighting the City’s stories to international audiences and wining international accolades.
The successful filmmakers are mentored through the process from start to finish; with this unique collaboration providing the opportunity to learn all aspects of producing a film. This includes the technical requirements, storytelling fundamentals, post-production techniques and marketing and communication strategies.
In partnership with the City of Vincent, Revelation Film Festival is running 2022/23 City of Vincent Film Project to create a series of short documentaries made in and about the City of Vincent.
The City of Vincent is looking for stories in and about Vincent! The City has a wealth of subject matter – local characters, urban legends, extraordinary community groups doing amazing things, local history, businesses that serve the community in special ways plus facilities and parks that hold special meanings to our community.
Projects must be in the documentary genre, but can be comedic, dramatic or animated. Films must be between 5 and 10 minutes in length including credits and suitable for screening at all age events. Up to three projects will be selected for funding. Support consists of a cash component of $7,000 plus a documentary master class, and mentoring during the development, production and post-production phases. All projects must be shot in the City of Vincent.
The successful films will screen at a special gala during the 26th annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival July in at Luna Palace Cinemas Leederville.
Applications open from 21 September 2022 and can be made via the City of Vincent website at www.vincent.wa.gov.au/filmproject. Applications close 17 November 2022 with the finalists announced on 13 December 2022.
