This thing is next level!

Not just regarded as one of Australia’s best psychological horror movies, but one of the best ever made, this classic slice of the form is a must see on the big screen for fans of the genre.

Over the past decade and half, its reputation as a genuine freakout has continued to grow with Collider magazine describing it as “the most devastating horror movie every made.” High praise indeed and rightly so. 

The foreboding grabs you right from the start as we’re introduced to the story of a missing girl, Alice Palmer, presumed drowned in the said lake whilst on holiday with her family. From there the tension is ratcheted up as the story unfolds told as a documentary report mixed with home movies. Post event, the Palmer family are subjected to all forms of paranormal activity from hauntings to unknown noises to apparitions as they try to understand what has actually happened and why.

Lake Mungo is packed with fantastically authentic performances throughout and as the family grapples with the unfathomable loss of a family member and their greatly assisted by the fresh and lean style and enormous restraint from director Joel Anderson.

This is a real treat for lovers of the horror/thriller form, Australian cinema more generally and a great inspiration for independent filmmakers, whatever their leaning.
