Nuts! tells the almost unbelievable story of Dr John Romulus Brinkley, a depression-era ‘visionary’ who built his empire on a combination of border radio and goat testicle transplants (which consisted of transplanting slices of goat testicles into human males in order to cure impotence). Somehow he invented everything from junk mail to the infomercial, and was almost the Governor of Kansas.
Through a combination of animation, archive footage and interviews, director Penny Lane offers an insight not just into one man but into the birth of the modern era, medicine and quacks, and the potential of mass media.
Lovingly animated and a joy to watch, Nuts! is an exploration and celebration of a different era, of a world that is familiar yet somehow uncanny.
“A ridiculously enjoyable ode to old, weird America“ – The Guardian
