THIS IS ROCK!
Fringe World Film Program
Dir: Lindsay Hallam /Jeff Krulik
Duration: full session 70mins
This double-header a match made in heaven as we explore the local music scene in Perth's legendary music venue the Hyde Park Hotel AND explore the carpark outside of a Judas Priest concert in 1986.
For many, the Hyde Park Hotel was a music institution for years. Supporting and showcasing all manner of local talent across all manner of styles (and capability), the venue was one of the last bastions of the local independent music scene. Faced with closure at the time, this great local piece examines the history, legacy and importance of this inner city venue.
Playing in support is arguably one of the most pirated movies ever made - Heavy Metal Parking Lot.
With his early video camera, filmmaker Jeff Krulik spend a few hours in the carpark just prior to a Judas Priest concert interviewing the audience and documenting the happenings. What he gets is an hilarious low-fi and utterly fantastic snapshot of youth gone awry.
Seeing this film makes you part of a strange international film and music cult - and may also introduce you to one of the most interesting of filmmakers.
